Newcastle 2012

"We were so overwhelmed with the attendance. It was certainly one of the biggest crowds I have ever seen with well over 40,000 people, more than double the number of spectators who came to the event last year," Offshore Superboat Championship President Adam Gilbert said.

"We are keen to ensure Newcastle will be included on the Offshore Superboat Championships calendar in 2013 and will be doing everything we can to make this happen."

"We will be looking closely at our popular two race format, which has proved to be a big hit at other venues, which would make the Newcastle event even bigger."

The Offshore Superboat Championships formed part of Newcastle's Fuelarama Festival, which included more than 300 muscle and classic cars from Australia and the United States, a country music concert and plenty of free activities for the whole family to enjoy.

It is estimated the Offshore Superboat Championship, together with Fuelarama, injected nearly seven hundred thousand dollars into the Newcastle economy.

"Considering the Member for Newcastle Tim Owen helped to secure twenty thousand dollars in government funding for this event, I believe it was an excellent return for local business and a great spectacle for the public," Fuelarama Organiser Conn Saloumidis said.

During the event significant funds were raised for childrens charity Variety and for the Oncology Unit at the Childrens Hospital at Westmead in Sydney.

"The support we received from the Newcastle public was amazing and to raise so much money for two worthy causes was an outstanding effort," Saloumidis said.

On the water and in near perfect racing conditions on Sunday, 12 boats from across three classes battled it out for Class Honours for the first time in 2012.

In Supercat 1000, Maritimo's Main Lube Express held out The Good Guys to take out Race One honours with Global Racing and Australian Vehicle Wholesale Racing claiming the minor positions.

In Supercat 600, Kwozzy 2 took the chequered flag, while in Supercat 400 Mick Walker and Gary Smith aboard Team Phantom, won their opening race of the Championships.

Round Two of the Offshore Superboat Championships will be held in Mackay on 23- 24 June, 2012.
